I went to Belize in October and had a really good time. It was a trip with business mixed with pleasure, hanging out with friends. Since it was the off-season, we were definitely approached many times by locals who were doing their best to scrape by financially.
One night we went to a bar in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and there were 4 drug dealers and 5 prostitutes and only about 10 other people there AND it was the only place that had any live music that night. The caye was dead. I would totally go back to the bar. But, this is more a warning for those who want to go during the off-season that you may feel more at ease during the in-season, Nov-April. It didn't bother me much, but just relaying my experiences. Caye Caulker - That place was much more relaxed in my opinion than Ambergris.
I would visit both personally and the water taxi can allow you to do that even for a day trip either direction. It was an accident as far as we could tell that just went through the floor. I imagine this is extremely, extremely rare. Once again, it was off-season and sometimes things get weird. I thought it was an interesting and fun place for sure. Next time I'll get out on the dance floor. Belize City has its funny spots, but there are some good places to go, too.
The Princess Casino has the only bowling alley in Belize and perhaps one of the few movie theaters? There is a Russian dancing show there on weekends around pm that is cool to see. There is also a club. I actually stayed at the Biltmore Best Western which was safe, too, just on the north side of town.
