Best diving in Central America, fun and friendly people and some great eating and drinking options. Spent a week relaxing on this small island. Everyone is friendly. It seems very safe. Great tourist destination. Lots to do. Kids enjoying biking around. Great beaches. Great snorkeling. Also, I suggest feeding the seagulls. Water is clear as a diamond. We had two windy cool days, the others were quite hot.
Caye Caulker is a small coral island just a short boat ride from Belize City, and is ideal for taking short fun vacations. There are no motor cars here just sandy streets and walk ways, lots of small restaurants and many many bars.
Very popular with the younger crowed, it is situated on the second longest Barrier Reef in the world and has some amazing fish and marine life! You can even swim with the sharks and sting rays. The Island itself is divided by a narrow channel called the Split, which on the southern end has a great bar with lots of night time activity, and across the channel on the other side a dense mangrove forest reserve with lots of Birdlife.
TIP: Rent a place facing the barrier reef, more wind less mosquitos at night. Caye Caulker is a special place. It is relaxing, laid back, and very beautiful in most places on the island. We just returned from 2 weeks on the island and overall our experience was great.
The food can be inexpensive to expensive depending on your taste and what you expect. The locals are a mix of expats, local islanders, mayan and rastafarians with some hustlers and misfits as well. Pros: Very scenic, warm and clear water once you get past the sea grass near shore inexpensive mostly Leeward side: gorgeous at any time of day! Check out the seahorses at Iguana Reef and the pelicans! Reef the reef is beautiful, many large animals. However, see cons below for the flip side plentiful lobster when in season Snorkeling many large animals, i.
