I have been to Kona several times in the past; I lived in Pahoa. My husband and I visited the Big Island for the first time since we lived here 10 years ago. We decided to have dinner in Kona and see the town again The town is extremely run down. There were homeless people and drug dealers everywhere. It was disgusting and dangerous. I can't imagine vacationing there or taking a family there. I can't say I've ever spent that much on a hotel in my life, but I'm looking forward to treating myself.
Mauni Lani had a book 3 nights and get one free with breakfast special. It's my 25th anniversary I don't want the crowds and Disney-ike atmosphere. Can't wait.
Total trip will be June 10 to 30, We will be in Maui for 7 days, and only 3 day in Kona.. My husband wanted to pop onto the BIg Island to see the volcano and just one island we have not been on. I am wondering how sick I am going to get..
But it sounds like it is down there also and no escaping it!! My question is should I travel up to the VNP for the day with my asthma condition, or let him go on a tour. I would have for him to drive it alone? Of course I am not asking for medical advise, just not certain how serious this VOG is on a person. You said it really bothered you?! I am now very worried about my breathing there. It is already bad heading over due to change of seasons and allergies here in states. What to do?? I don't want to be in fear of it, but also don't want to end up in ER Hospital.

I think you would be wise to avoid VNP and Kona. Kohala , Hamakua, and probably Hilo are usually not severe, especially not Hamakua. It's too bad that this thread came back with a question about vog when there was a thread on the first page with vog in the title.
