Read in one guide book that there can be high levels of drunken violence so would be keen to avoid! I do not think Oslo is more violent than other big cities. Unless you stay out until the very small hours, I think you should be perfectly safe. Use your common sense and do not get too drunk yourself.
Do not get overdrunk and do not get involved in arguments with drunk young men. A group of 3 adult men has no reason to worry. I'm sure Oslo is no worse than anywhere else, just picking up on something I read. Everywhere else seems to suggest it's a friendly place, even at night.

I am surprised that a resident of Liverpool, the crack capital of UK, would find find Oslo a big problem in this respect. It is unfortunate that most EU cities have a problem with begging in the streets and the richer cities are particularly exposed - a consequence of huge differences in wealth across the EU.
Begging is legal in Norway , but not aggressive begging and I haven't experienced any cups rattled under my nose or being hounded. Similarly prostitution is legal, but the buying of sexual services is heavily penalised. There has been much discussion in the papers recently over increasing visibility of prostitutes, after numbers were much reduced when buying of services was made illegal. Prostitutes generally hang out around Skippergate so if you are troubled by them avoid this area.
