Now the three Cape Town women who discovered their names on MXit's "slut" lists this week are not just livid, they're desperate to find out exactly who tarnished their reputations. The lists were circulated among Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng users, and were "copy-catted" to some of the other provinces. Until this week, none had appeared in the Western Cape. Some are harmless, listing the names of the "50 hottest hunks in Durban" while others such as the "slut list" and "bastard list" maliciously shame boys and girls.
The "slut list" alleges rampant promiscuity by the women named, while the "bastard list" tarnishes the reputations of its male victims. Last week MXit urged victims to go to the police. They said they would assist authorities in finding the culprits who started the defamatory lists and an example will be made of those found to be guilty. Another Cape Town woman, a customer service representative, said she was shocked when she first saw the "slut list".
